Just checked the Authority on All Things Random, who/which/that says:

begin quote  It is sometimes referred to as the "Sally Anne" in Canada and the "Sally Army" or "Sally Bash" in the United Kingdom. In Australia, the full name is rarely used, with the slang abbreviation "The Salvos" displayed even on shop fronts, while in New Zealand they are referred to as "The Sallies". quote ends

Notice this Wikipedia article is part of an extensive series, which smacks of horror! original research. And the URL actually redirects from ...wikipedia/Sally_ann

The Australian part is correct, anyway - they're always called the Salvos.

One of the random things I love about Australia is how every is just shorter there. Mackers! Mozzies! Salvos! :)

It's mostly great, until people invariably try to shorten my name, which doesn't work for me.

I agree!
When I thought about it, I could remember hearing Sally Ann in the context of The Salvation Army ("The Salvos!") before, but I'm not sure where. Also, I think of Sally Ann as potentially a person's name, but it also pings me really strongly as a doll's name, so I picked that. Maybe just because of Raggedy Ann & Andy, though. Who knows; my brain is strange...

Like others, I guessed it from context but my first instinct is a person's name. I've certainly never heard it in the US. In my mind I always say "the Salvos" because a good friend of mine is Australian and once attended a Salvation Army church and so talked about them a lot.

A friend of mine was on the squad that drove a Salvation Army truck to fire scenes, to provide gatorade and water to the firefighters, coffee and blankets for the folks affected by the fire, and the squad members and the firefighters referred to it as "the Sally Wagon." When I questioned the name, they told me it derived from the Sally Ann nickname.

Huh, in our parts of the woods, that job always goes to the American Red Cross, who are well known for first-responder support, disaster relief, and clumsy cruel handling of blood products during the beginning years of the AIDS epidemic, and so on.

Around here, the ARC gets all the attention, they provide hotel room vouchers for 3 nights, and some limited cash assistance for toiletries and immediate clothes, but their people never come to a fire site, you have to call them (business hours only) if you need help.

Got it from context, but yes, I knew it as a name before. In the American South, it's very common to name people with two names and/or use first and middle in conversation, so my granny refers to my dad and his siblings as "Gene Earl," "Jackie Roy," and "Vicki Lynn." Thus, when I see two names, that's what I jump to. I also know "Suzanna Mae," "Mary Jo," "Sean Paul," "Ian James," and more. My parents call us by first and middle sometimes, especially my younger sisters because their names are shorter. Mine is a mouthful, though it does work together.

I'm Aussie, so I and everyone else I know always call them the Salvos (I second [personal profile] jesse_the_k's quote of Wikipedia - they even call themselves the Salvos). But I said that Sally Anne is the nickname for them because my mum's family are all Canadian, and they all call the Salvos the Sally Annes. It's one of the things I have to incorporate into my Australian-to-Canadian codeswitching, actually, otherwise no one will know what I'm talking about.
