Google Chrome crashed and now all of my bookmarks and settings and stuff are gone.
I have a bookmarks.bak file, but for some reason I cannot get that to do anything like load my bookmarks.
Halp?

A quick google found this that you're not the only one.

So, what you have to do is:

  1. Close chrome.

  2. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

  3. Copy your bookmark.bak out to another folder.

  4. delete bookmark file (with no extension) and bookmark.bak

  5. Copy your bookmark.bak in again.

  6. Rename it to bookmark (with no extension).

Sorry I can't help with your settings! /o

Sadly, I tried that and it didn't work. Ah well! Life goes on, right? :) But thank you!

Ok, one quick and dirty fix for bookmarks might be to install something like firefox or internet explorer. When you set it up, it'll ask you if you want to import all your old favourites and stuff. Say yes.

Alternatively, on XP: Go to C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\
On Vista: C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\
You have to be able to see hidden or system folders, otherwise, just paste it in to you address bar and press enter.

Once there, you should see a bunch of files. Two of which are called "Bookmarks", and "Bookmarks.bak". Copy the Bookmarks.bak file to a safe location. Now, close Chrome. Rename the "Bookmarks.bak" file you just copied to "Bookmarks", and copy it back in to that directory, overwriting the original one.

There may be a chance it it's too late, 'cause if you close and re-launch Chrome, the Bookmarks.bak file gets overwritten =\
