This is something I wrote for FWD that won't be going up for a couple of days:

John Stossel, if your business doesn't accommodate wheelchair users chances are you don't have many customers who are wheelchair users.

(Gentle reader, I cannot believe I just typed that sentence 20 years after the ADA passed into law.)

(There is more than that in the post, I promise.)

Today is Jerry Lewis Hates Cripples Day!. (He really did tell people with disabilities that if they don't want pity they should just stay in their homes. I'm so happy he got a humanitarian award for his work with "the disabled", aren't you?)

I was reminded by this post by Bad Cripple about new ways to create social change about how much I want to do some things on campus, like block the front access to the main admin building and advise people to "find another route" (without a sign), and go around one day and put up signs in front of every inaccessible building with "This building does not allow wheelchair users to enter".

Of course, I also want to write in chalk in front of various buildings in Halifax "Wheelchair Users Not Welcome".

You should now talk me out of this.

Do you have a source for Jerry Lewis's telling people to stay home? I thoroughly believe it. Even his "humor" strikes me as sleazy.

But in case anyone accuses me of taking his words out of context...

I fully support you in this endeavor.

Especially the signs and the chalk; I think those would be more effective than blocking the entrance.

My issue with the entrance in question is that there *is* barrier free access to the building. It's just not labelled anywhere, so one can actually go around looking for it, or even assuming it's not there, for some time.

I get why you'd want to do it, I just don't think it'd be as effective. People wouldn't know what point you were trying to make, whereas the signs/chalk are obvious.

Could you chalk on the walls of the building? Or maybe put the chalk at the end of a long stick, like those pointy things they use to pick up litter?

Just some suggestions...

that (for some reason) feels extremely thrilling

which probably means it's a good thing i don't quite know where halifax is ~heh~

I was assured last year that all events hosted by the Student Union were accessible to all students.

When I asked about a 'terp they stared at me like I'd grown an extra head. They also got shirty with me when I suggested their videos do need to be subtitled if they want them to be accessible, and then suggested they use google to sort out how to do that. I'm not very nice, and this seems to piss them off.

I was eying some nice lengths of stick the other day, and I know where to get the signs laminated and everything. I bet I could even get some official university letterhead to put it on, if I tried really hard.

good, good....

*I say, nursing RSI from hell this week. ok, so maybe pounding peices of plate steel into dishes for pollaxe guards was a bad idea...*

and if you want the university letterhead, if you have any correspondence from 'em, I might accidentally be able to create a nice decent high-res image for you to print out yourself, so you can have it all official on whatever size you want... :)

(and I cant talk about enabling. at her funeral, I discovered my aunt had been arrested in the 80's for spraypainting CND symbols onto the walls of the Ministry of Defence.... :) )
