I backed up all of my bookmarks to Diigo a while ago. Diigo! It will import everything from Delicious should you wish, and it can also mirror delicious for you so you can maintain a delicious account until delicious goes down.

Diigo, I note, does not play well with DW. I have to C&P links into Diigo rather than using the Diigolet for DW links. It works fine with LJ.

It will import? Really?

*is horrified and aghast*

I have thousands of bookmarks saved, archiving every single entry ever made at [livejournal.com profile] still_grrr. It took months.

Yahoo is horrible and I want them to die slowly. *fumes*

...I am so, so glad that you mentioned this. Because I probably wouldn't have noticed. And I save a bunch of research on it.

(Also, completely off topic--do you mean to allow your lj to be googlable? because it is.)

Thanks - I had no idea Delicious is going away, and I've been bookmarking everything there for a long time. I've got almost 20,000! I'll see how Diigo looks.

Can you please clarify for me?

You said it's the diigolet that has trouble with the dreamwidth bookmarks, so does that mean importing everything from delicious has worked out well for you? Because I can always write my own applet/extension, but if if doesn't like them on the site itself, there's not much I can do.

(found through a google search-- everyone seems to have taken this as gospel truth!)

Thank you for the information!

And was it speedy back when you did it? Apparently it's going very slowly for the comm mod I'm researching for, but I was assuming that was because of the server strain.

I have been using diigo fairly extensively for the past year, and the diigolet (bookmarklet, rather than extension, which I can't comment on) will not work with dreamwidth. When you try to open it to tag the current page you're on, it just shows the "Loading Diigolet..." notice and never actually loads the interface at all. I've had to paste bookmarks from dreamwidth directly into the add a bookmark page on diigo.com in order to save them to the site.

I haven't tried importing bookmarks to diigo, since I've just been using it as a private catalog all of the fic I read this year, so IDK if importing dreamwidth links works.

That's good to hear! Do you know if diigo allows tag bundles? I have 14 tags ATM, and no real need to bundle them, but if I import my bookmarks from delicious, bundling is crucial. The interface is not exactly user-friendly, and a quick google didn't give me an answer, so I thought someone who actually uses the service might know.

That is very helpful, thank you! That seems like a neat feature on its own, but definitely not a replacement for bundles. Too bad you can't have a list of tags.

Thanks for the info! I will definitely look around. Yeah, I love tag bundles (witness my crazily organized delicious tags), so it is frustrating that none of the delicious alternatives offer them (or hierarchical tags of any kind it seems). Hopefully some kind of alternative will show up in the near future.

Completely unrelated (hi!) but I checked out your awesomely organized tags list and found more reading material. :) So, uh, thanks for the recs?

I love tag bundles so much, I hope that, wherever fandom ends up moving to, we get to keep those. *crosses fingers*

You're welcome! I'm always happy to provide recs, since that's most of what I use delicious for.

And it looks like we may not have to move after all! It looks like Yahoo plans to sell Delicious, rather than shut it down.

Well, I just signed up for Pinboard, myself... based partly on the recommendation in this post at [community profile] deliciouslymad. Diigo seems like it's more an Evernote competitor than a Delicious replacement, what with the complex browser integration, highlighting & annotating, etc. Way too big and feature-bloated for what I need--although I can totally see that for big research projects it could be tremendously useful.

I like the Pinboard focus on fast, simple, secure online bookmarking. (I notice that none of Diigo's promotional "Join now" stuff makes any mention of privacy or data security at all.) Oh, and one other little detail that I like with Pinboard is the option of making newly-added bookmarks private by default which I always thought it was unforgivably manipulative of Delicious to not provide. Of course, I was a very light Delicious user and I didn't actually use tag bundles (which Pinboard doesn't support) or get a lot of mileage out of the "social" aspect of it (which Pinboard does offer, and with better privacy options, such as private-by-default, and having certain tags private even on a shared bookmark).

Oh. Ouch.

If it had been a recurring subscription cost, that probably would have put me off quite effectively, but yeah... even with a modest one-off signup fee, it ain't the same as free.
