So this is a thing that happened.

Sign Language Ban Imposed on N.J. Girl

School officials have threatened a hearing-impaired girl with suspension if she uses sign language to talk to her friends on the school bus, the girl's parents say.

Danica Lesko and her parents say sign language is the only way to for the 12-year-old to communicate, especially while riding to school on a noisy bus.

But officials at Stonybrook School — which is not a school for the hearing-impaired — and district officials in Branchburg, N.J., apparently believe signing is a safety hazard. They have sent a letter to the Lesko family ordering Danica to stop using sign language on the school bus or risk a three-day suspension.

...

"The Board is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to all students with disabilities, and is satisfied that there has been no violation of that policy in this case," officials said in the statement. "The Board is also committed to assuring the safety of all students who travel on District buses, and will continue to take appropriate steps to accomplish that goal."

LET'S PLAY A FUN GAME.

Well, they actually say in the article what the safety hazard is - other students are getting out of their seats to harass her. And obviously it's her fault, for being so harassable that kids are compelled to break the rules in order to bully her.

(Interesting that it says she lost her hearing because of something a classmate did - I wonder if that was an accident or an "accident".)

However, this is from 11 years ago Here is the resolution, here is an article with actual date.

(Unless I'm misunderstanding and this was being presented as an old thing and just used for discussion - in which case disregard the above!)

Argh, Tumblr! That story has been making the rounds presented as a new news item. *sigh*

ETA: Which is to say, I reblogged it because it's, you know, the kind of thing that happens and I didn't think to check to see if it was an ELEVEN YEAR OLD STORY.

Yeah - and because it says April 18 up top of the page it looks like it should be recent. If there hadn't been someone in the comments saying it's old I wouldn't have looked.

I want to share my alternate theory with everyone, so my answer to your essay question:

"Clearly she is signalling THE TAIRR-RISTS and will probably start wearing hijab if we don't stop her now."

Also, Kittens and Ponies for cute. Cows for lunch!

With all due respect, I consider denying someone the right to converse with peers truly abusive. It may not be physically violent, but it is psychologically so.

What if a Hearing child were forbidden to speak, because other students on the bus teased her for a foreign accent, or a stutter?

I agree with you about the less faily world, though. Definitely.

Yeah, I posted that and went back to work and went "I didn't think that comment through well, did I..." but haven't actually had access to DW between now and then. (I also didn't read the other comments about the reason until after commenting.)

Sign language does seem to be TERRIBLY THREATENING to some people! For example, work this week included long extracts from TWO cases where students sued the education system for refusing to provide them with Auslan interpreters in the classroom.

Both cases went to appeal after the primary judges found that, by permitting the students to sit in classrooms, the departments of education had fulfilled their requirements to provide reasonable access to education, and if the lessons were conducted in a language the students didn't speak, that's just too bad.

Suffice to say the courts of appeal were unamused.

And last week, the only Auslan course in the state was de-funded, because jails are so much more valuable than interpreters.

Well, you can conduct whole systems of commerce around prisons: the construction workers to build them, guards to staff them, slave rehabilitating labor from the inmates, housing for the staff's families....

Once people learn a language, it's free to use, and they can pass it on to their kids for free, too! How is the state going to reap any revenue from that?

Clearly, my poor, leftist, [personal profile] lizbee, you have failed to think this through properly...

My evilness answer is tempered by having read too much about what U.S. schools used to do to kids who spoke languages other than English. It doesn't sound like they've gotten to the point of saying "Anyone who speaks ASL is an evil rotten no-good poohead who will never amount to anything." or "Anyone who admits to ever having known any ASL is an etc."

Sigh. Some people suck.

Speaking as an actual deaf person, yes, they actually do sink that low. That was, in fact, the whole argument behind the push for Oralism that started with Alexander Graham Bell. Not all people have caught up with the enlightened idea that any language is better than no language at all, let alone the idea that signed languages are actually languages and not just Random Gang Signs.

Sounds awfully similar to "if people are speaking language I don't understand they're obviously talking about ME ME ME! LEARN ENGLISH!"
