trouble: Sketch of Hermoine from Harry Potter with "Bookworms will rule the world (after we finish the background reading)" on it (Default)
I'm just popping my head up a bit to share some good news, in chronological rather than order of importance.

1) The Student Loan issue has been "solved" in that I now owe thousands of dollars to family and not to a collection agency that will randomly have my bank account frozen. We've also ending our banking relationship with the previous bank. Not because they froze my bank account on the 30th of the month. That bit I disagree with but understand. No, because I called them up to have them take money out of my account to apply to the loan, they took the money out of my account electronically and then froze my account for 10 days to see whether or not the money would clear. This was not what was discussed over the phone, and it makes no sense because the money was taken from my account before they froze it again. So, you know. I bank elsewhere now, and most of Don's investments have been moved as well. (The only things not moved are long-term investments that are locked in for another year, but those will go as well.)

2) Don's vocal cords are getting better! He saw the doctor, and this is what he says: "Whet he thinks is happening is that the nerves have come back but the ones that tell the cord to close and the ones that tell it to open are all firing at once. This is resulting in the chord mostly staying rigid which is why its worlds better but not 100% of pre surgery. The nerves might sort them out a bit more so that the chord starts to move a little more but the important thing is that its not going to get weaker." I know I've mentioned this before but having actual medical doctors say "yes, it's getting better, no, it's not a fluke, and it won't get worse" has been a huge weight off his mind.

3) My PhD apps are almost ready to go. I've got two more days for my UofA transcripts to arrive, but all of my letters of reference are packed and ready to go, as is my writing sample, CV, various bits of paperwork, thesis proposal, statement of intent, etc etc etc. The post office tells me I can have it shipped Priority Next Day AM if I get to the post office before 4pm Thursday. (The technical deadline for both universities is January 15th. [The last one is January 31st.] January 15th is a Saturday. *sigh*)

So, yay for me. Things are coming along nicely. Chapter 2 is doing really well. My sleep is a bit screwed up (I stayed up too late last night and thus couldn't get myself out of bed this morning to hit the Leg Library), but generally things are Good. My wee laptop is totally a goner, but I'm taking advantage of the university's computers. (Right now that's irritating me because there are many students here who have confused "quiet conversation" with "Make a lot of noise" but I just need to wait them out.) I'm a bit lonely (I misssssss youuuuu) but I've been working and reading a lot, so I guess that's good.

Goodbye From FWD.

In one of those things that I find terribly funny (but other people may not), my final post on FWD is about Glee. It's a transcript of the WBAI program "The Largest Minority", in which various people discuss Glee and it's depictions of disability, and includes more details on that thing I mentioned where Ryan Murphy was invited to a major industry event about disability and accessibility hosted by the Screen Actors Guild and didn't show up: Glee and Disability in Pop Culture.

What I find funny about this is the reason FWD stopped posting anything about Glee was because I asked everyone not to. I still get a few emails a month from people telling me to kill myself over my posts on the topic at Bitch and on FWD, and at the time I was having panic attacks at even the idea of looking at another discussion of the show.

I updated my Bundle of RSS feeds for disability-focused blogs. Check out my awesome gReader bundle!. It does include parent-focused blogs and educator focused blogs. It doesn't include anyone from DW or LJ, sadly. I may update it in a few days to include those, I'm not sure. Feel free to use it in any way (or no way!) that you wish, and ping me to add someone if you think I should. I in no way think it's at all even a tiny tiny fraction of the disability-focused blogs out there.

I'm taking the next month or so (ish) off from the internet. If there's anything personal experience has taught me, it's that this is difficult for me, since about 90% of my friends are online, and a lot of them communicate primarily through blogs & LJ/DW. But, I will have email, so don't hesitate for one moment to email me should you wish. Be aware, though, that I'll be only checking my email once a day, because I need to focus on everything I need to get done in January if Don & I are going to blow the pop-stand of Halifax.

I hope you all have or had a wonderful Gregorian New Year's Eve, and many joyous returns of the day.

Circus!

trouble: (new1)
So, yesterday on my way out the door I noticed the landlord had put a notice above the mailbox, indicating that there were going to be testing the firealarms on Monday, all day, and also they may need access to people's apartments. I guess that counts as 48 hours notice.

In more pleasant news, I hope to get out to the Legislative Library tomorrow because they have things I want in the treasure room. They don't let me in the treasure room because they are horrible mean people, but they will bring me things from there. Then they hand me pretty pretty white gloves and let me touch things. (Or maybe not this time - I think I actually just need access to Hansard, which is in pretty bound books in the building across the street, and they make me sit in a small room with poor lighting while I go through things.)

Oh, since I am apparently randomly babbling at 4:30 in the morning.

Check out this gift Don got for his birthday last year )
trouble: "History Major: If you need me, come find me in the archives" (archives)
Me: Oh, hey, Nocturne is this weekend, do you want to go?

Don: Um, not really, as much fun as going around and not being able to get into most of the venues could be.

Me: Oh no! We could go to the archives for Nocturne! There will be free I Heart Archives buttons! And also, they are wheelchair accessible!

Don: Ooh, that could be interesting!

And that's how the Nova Scotia Archives Saved Nocturne.

Also, look at this:

As a bonus... we're also having:

- a "listening station" available so folks can listen to folk songs and ghost stories recorded by Helen Creighton.
- an artist's desk recreated, featuring watercolours and handmade valentines.
- storage boxes from the Victoria School of Art and Design.
- Victorian-era marbled paper for you book-binding nerds.
- An amazing poster by one of the talented Prat sisters.
- Free popcorn!
- Free "I heart Archives" buttons!

Free popcorn. Seriously, I'm going to be sitting outside the doors at 6 with my face pressed against the glass, you just know it.
trouble: Coffee cup with two hearts in the foam. (coffee and hearts)
This not-getting-enough-sleep thing has gotten really tedious.

Last night I couldn't sleep so I stayed up until 8:45 a.m. reading about missing people and mysterious murders and uncaptured serial killers on Wikipedia, as one does.

(LJ-folks, if you were reading this on DW, you would see my awesome icons. For some reason I have 5 or 6 that are just coffee icons. Coffee coffee coffee.)
trouble: A sunshine with a smile. (doodlebug sun)
Anna on a Boat - I'm a chubby white chick, the boat is a sail boat, and I'm happier than a happy person!

We bought more plants! There is now a pair of peppers joining our pair of tomatoes on the tiny balcony of awesome. I love my tiny balcony of many plants.

It is a holiday! Had I been a grown-up I would be cramming for my French Competency Test tomorrow, but instead I've been happily uploading icons and looking at pictures from when I was in Australia. Look! Picture of me! *is happy at you*

Don & Katie & [personal profile] emee & I are making plans to go out! I like Don & Katie & Emmy so this is awesome :D

I bought a dictionary! It is Collins Essential French Dictionary & Grammar - in colour! It makes me happy.

There is a [livejournal.com profile] bubosquared sighting! :D!

Tomorrow, after the French Competency Test, it is archives day!!!!!!!!!

Life is awesome!
trouble: Amy from Doctor Who walking away from the Doctor - "La la la, I can't hear you" (amy & the doctor)
So! [livejournal.com profile] karenhealey is doing her now-annual 24 hour YA Readathon to raise monies for a charity, which got me to think: This year, I may be able to participate in the 24 hour blogathon. Which I've been trying to participate in since the second year it went down, but have never been able to.

If I were to go through with it, I'd want to support the Abilities Foundation, which is a Halifax-based charity that provides wheelchairs to low-income families in Nova Scotia. Full Confession: They provide Don's wheelchair and pay for any repairs it needs when it's not broken by AirCanada.

But I was toying around with what I would dooooo for 24 hours of blogging. And I was talking to [personal profile] meloukhia (which always leads to Bad) and ...

Well, I could do a 24-hour RPG online.

Or I could do a 24-hour RPG off-line, although I am not in the RPG community here the way I was in Edmonton when I had the idea the first time.

Or I could do 24 hours of reading & reviewing history books.

Or I could do vlogs about stuff (haven't you ever wanted to *watch* my flailing about dead people?) but I image upload problems.

At one point I thought it would be fun to do a 24 hour trip and update with just photos from wherever I was, but the night photos probably would just be [this space intentionally left black].

I dunno. I suppose it could be fun to take a bunch of photos of places around Halifax and do 24 hours of Halifax History Blogging about them.

Thoughts? Talking me out of it?
trouble: Man jumping with "Actions speak louder than icons" (Actions are LOVE! icon!)
Oh 3 a.m. It's been a mere 24 hours since you last darkened my experiences. *sigh* Insomnia is more fun when it involves baking cookies.

The wheelchair repair people showed up today, took the wheelchair away, and assured us that we'd hear by by this afternoon about how long it would take to fix, and what it would cost.

At 3:30 Don called them to find out what was up, and was told "Oh, no, we're not even going to look at it before Monday."
this is random life-blethering, mostly very down )
Okay, enough of that. Tomorrow = free trial yoga, perhaps Mandatory Togetherness Time with Katie & Emmy, and Don has promised I can buy a new book. (He has also, cleverly, told me which book I can buy from my "I MUST HAVE THIS BOOK OR I WILL DIE RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW" list, because otherwise book buying will take three days and a pony.)

Here, have a picture of a cow (and me!):
A person dressed in a cow suit wearing a daisy hat and holding her hands in a 'thumbs up', with me standing next to her grinning like a fool - I has a cow!
